We are living in contentious times. The contention is very often sharp and has the ability to stifle conversation, even between Christians! Behind the contention is a fundamental lack of peace. There is a lack of peace individually and as a community. The peace we long for, it appears, is unobtainable on our own. Where do we find help?
This sermon points us to the third characteristic the Spirit produces in the community of believers; peace. The fruit of the Spirit is peace. This peace the Spirit produces in us is, according to our two texts, supernatural, its more than an individualistic pursuit, those who pursue it are in dangerous places, and peace comes at great cost.
For the man or woman desiring the Spirit of the fruit, there is only one way to get it. It comes through believing the gospel of Christ, of whom it was said, “The punishment that brought us peace was upon him.” He came and preached peace to those who were near and to those wh
