Right from the very first, those of us who've chosen to follow Jesus have been plagued by our propensity to operate in kingdom life with both a sense of entitlement and often a well disguised self absorption. That's what we find Jesus dealing with in this encounter with James, John, and their mom. They'd thought this thing through for long enough that it made perfect sense to them and they fully expected Jesus to jump on the idea. All this thinking through, though, went right out the window when Jesus began to help them understand they had no idea what they were asking. What was worse, they had fallen into the trap of acting like the Gentiles who equated power and position with greatness. So, what needs to happen for us to break free of our self absorption and sense of entitlement? Saying only what we hear the father saying and doing only what we see the father doing.
