Playing tracks by
Queen, Trace & Nico, Twisted Anger, Decoder, Dylan and more.
In 1997 I did a mix I named "Flash Gordon" because I used the Space Capsule track from the Flash Gordon soundtrack as the intro. In the first 20 minutes of the mix I only played four tracks, but they were all incredible dark DNB and it sounded awesome. Unfortunately I started mixing in more jump-up-oriented tracks afterward and lost the mood.
For this new mix I started off with the same tracks, then followed up with more dark tracks from my collection. Nothing is newer than 1999.
I stole the name "Darker Than Dark" from the label of Twisted Anger Vol. 4 on the Penny Black label (but in this mix, I only played a track from Vol. 3, "Society").
On this mix I tried to ride mixes as much as possible. Listening to "Flash Gordon" I noticed a tendency to beatmatch tracks so that they were in sync, but had the downbeats in different places when cutting in tracks. This produced an interesting syncopation effect. I tried to recreate this a few times, hopefully it sounds good here.
