The Liz Coward Special
My guest this week practised as a solicitor in Portsmouth, London and Sussex before reinventing herself after a serious mental illness, having a child at 40 and going on to gain an MA in screenwriting, having work heard on the BBC and collaborating with fellow Shoreham resident and a previous guest on the programme, Alison Lapper. Author and scriptwriter, Liz Coward published ‘Blood and Bandages’ on the 28th April to widespread acclaim. The book is about William Earl, who joined the 214th Field Ambulance Royal Army Medical Corps and follows William’s story through North Africa and the entire Italian campaign at Salerno, Anzio and the Gothic Line. His was the last comforting voice heard by many a dying soldier. Liz worked closely with William, who was 102 on the 12 May, and the book has been movingly assembled with extracts from letters home, photographs and war diaries.
