Originally broadcast Thursday 29th August 2013: Hour 2: Songs inspired by actors
Rock gets dressed up and walks on the red carpet this week. Lou Reed wrote Femme Fatale and ‘Walk on the Wild Side about actors from Andy Warhol’s Factory. The Passions were famously in love with a German Film Star whilst Suzanne Vega references a real German star in ‘Marlene on the Wall’.
There has always been a close relationship between rock stars and the movies. Many singers have appeared in movies – David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan to name but three. However, there have been some great songs inspired by film stars. Two songs appear on Elton’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road about Marilyn Monroe and Roy Rogers respectively – probably the twin dream figures of any boy growing up in the fifties. Kim Carnes sang about Betty Davis Eyes and Suede have written a tribute to James Dean called ‘Daddy’s Speeding’ as did the Eagles ('James Dean'). This is your free movie ticket.
