My guest this week is a prolific writer of historical crime thrillers based in 18th Century London.
At 19 he joined the Metropolitan Police and posted to Hammersmith where one of his first duties was to attend the scene of the murder of three fellow officers behind Wormwood Scrubs prison - a brutal introduction to his new career.
Three years later he transferred to Thames where the language, the attitudes, the ethics of the men who worked the river – was to form the basis of the stories and characters in his books.
He left the force in November 1994 and became a freelance journalist.
Following the maxim that you should write about what you know, all his books are based in and around the Port of London at the end of the 18th Century.
