This event took a look back at the past 20 years of Burundian history and politics, examining Burundi within both the international and regional contexts. Our expert panel explored the role of the UN and the AU and their respective interventions; post-conflict reconstruction models, democratisation and power-sharing between Hutus and Tutsis; Burundi’s place in the Great Lakes region; and poverty reduction in rural Burundi within the framework of the MDGs.

Dr Devon Curtis (University of Cambridge) on post-conflict and peace-building.

Prime Ndikumagenge (BBC) on the role of civil society and the media in Burundi's conflict, peace-building and the democratization process.

Dr Bert Ingelaere (University of Antwerp) on the ontology of violence and reconciliation in Central Africa.

Chair: Dr Aidan Russell (University of Oxford)
