Human security is essential to the achievement of development goals. Yet its restoration has proved elusive in too many conflict-affected states in Africa. Given the current situation in Mali, this jointly convened meeting by the Africa All Party Parliamentary Group (Africa APPG) and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) will provide a timely opportunity to re-examine how successful current approaches to improving systems of governance, peacekeeping operations and security sector reform have been in helping to restoring stability and prosperity to conflict affected states in Africa. Drawing on fresh insights from a recent report from the APPG Africa, Security and Africa: An Update and new IDS research undertaken in Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire and Somalia, our expert panel will lead the discussion on what more needs to be done at the local, national, regional and international level to improve the wellbeing of people living in African countries
