- Bible Passage: Ecclesiastes 3:16-4:3
- When people, especially young people, think about life the question is not so much about purpose but significance. The thought is, 'I want to make a difference.' I want my life to amount to something of worth. So, people throw themselves into different causes, fighting against corruption, oppression and injustice. These are great things to put your energy into but, in the verses today, Solomon begins to dismantle the idea that doing these things will make a lasting impact. They are ultimately meaningless. Why? From an 'under the sun' perspective it never seems to end; it never is finished; there is always another place of injustice to tackle. This has been true through the ages and even today. It cries out for something more, something better, something lasting. It drives us back to God, who will redeem all things and bring righteous judgement.
