For most people, the blowfly is a creature that prompts revulsion, but in the case of Clarence Reid, it’s hard to look upon his work as *Blowfly* as anything but endearing. The moniker actually stems from his childhood in rural Georgia, where a young Reid would regularly come up with his own off-color parodies of popular country songs. Although the ditties entertained local farm workers, Reid’s grandparents were disgusted, prompting comparisons to he reviled insect. Undaunted, Reid kept on making his dirty songs, although several decades would pass before he could put the talent to good use. Breaking into the music industry in the early ’60s, Reid initially had to work clean, but his songwriting talents shined as he crafted a number of funk and soul gems, initially under his own name and later for a wide variety of artists, including *Betty Wright*, Helene Smith, *Gwen McCrae*, Paul Kelly and *KC & The Sunshine Band*.
