Very good discussion of the background and organization of the books, and how to use them. One minor quibble was on the discussion of name spellings, the specific spelling was indeed irrelevant for searching purposes, but not because name holders were making deliberate choices about spelling that are different from today, but because the vast majority of tenants would have been illiterate and would have no idea how to spell their names. So the applotment taker would write down what he heard, his spelling preferences would determine what appeared in the applotment books. Thus name variations that sound alike must be searched and makes it very important to use the asterisk as a wild card to catch variations.
