Lest We Forget Vol. 5 / Leo Wright: Flute, Sax and Soul

Lest We Forget Vol. 5 / Leo Wright: Flute, Sax and Soul

Playing tracks by

Leo Wright, Dizzy Gillespie Octet and Leo Wright (Live).

Leo Wright was a wonderfully versatile player with a knack for soulful blues. This mix takes a hard look at his three albums released for Atlantic/Vortex - specifically the tunes penned by the man himself. Wright played in many groups as a sideman but I enjoy his stint with Diz the most, and therefore have a few select tracks from a wonderful time in the legendary trumpeter's career. It's arguable, but I prefer the group heard in this mix over Gillespie's quintet with James Moody on sax. That said, one of my favorite Diz sides is infact "The Cool World", but overall I still prefer Wright in Moody's place. Finally, we have a couple of live tracks with Leo's own band circa mid 60's. Just to be clear, all of the tracks in this mix were penned by Wright EXCEPT the Diz tracks and the two live joints. So sit back, have a smoke and enjoy another player which time has pushed into the void of obscurity - another tragedy reversed as we shine a spotlight on the legendary Leo Wright.

Actually one side I forgot to include was Brother Jack McDuff's Screamin' - Wright had a big role on that one. Oh well, can't win em all. Glad you enjoyed it Doc!
