Lest We Forget Vol. 4 / Gigi Gryce: Definition Of Brilliance

Lest We Forget Vol. 4 / Gigi Gryce: Definition Of Brilliance

Playing tracks by

Gigi Gryce Quintet, Gigi Gryce Sextet, Gigi Gryce Quartet, Gigi Gryce Big Band, Gigi Gryce - Donald Byrd Jazz Lab and more.

Gigi Gryce was a true renaissance man. Some may want to go as far as saying he was a genius. One thing is certain - he could do it all; write, arrange, play and produce. In 1961, he left the music business and his career behind. This mix shows a nice variety of his legacy. Big band, small group, wonderful arrangements, interesting harmonic concepts, a full range of styles and all of this done with a soulful flare. Gryce was part of the Jazz Lab with Donald Byrd, and also a part of many other great combos. His two greatest compositions; Minority and Nica's Tempo are jazz standards. If you enjoy the music, I highly suggest finding the book Rat Race Blues, and then seeking out all of his wonderful albums. Enjoy!!

I'm with Dr. Jazz. I listened a while ago and just now again. Tasty. Thanks Pops.

I loved the book Rat Race Blues. I don't own enough Gryce to be able to do this kind of tribute, yet. Thanks for putting this together.
