What is a song? (What’s in a song?) Does a song need to have singing in it? Does a “song” have a particular structure? Do different cultures do “song” differently? What happens when songs get borrowed and adapted? In the age of the drone and the ambient mix is the song still relevant?
Here, in no particular order, are seventeen songs from recent record-releases. They range from post-punk to folk, from West African funk to Swiss dream-exploration, from love underwater to a narrow sea to watercolours. So maybe a song is a submergence, a moment of dissolution. Or just whatever a singer sings…….
A song lilts, doesn’t it? Happy lilting.
