Nothing really says Christmas and Cambridge quite like the sound of a treble singing the first verse of Once in Royal David’s City. In honour of Christmas and the upcoming Nine Lessons and Carols service here's a CHRISTMAS SPECIAL!
But, did you know that the Nine Lessons didn’t actually originate in Cambridge?
At the one hour mark I’m talking to Alexandra Coghlan, the author of Carols from King’s, a book which traces the evolution of the carol from bawdy drinking songs to the serenity of the Nine Lessons and Carols. You may be surprised to hear that the Nine Lessons began in Cornwall and that carols haven’t always been religious or even about Christmas, let alone sung by choirs in cassocks in Cambridge.
Details of the music on the TRACKLIST as always.
