Each year for over two decades now, the people of New York Mills,
Minnesota have played host to something called THE GREAT AMERICAN THINK
OFF. They come up with a core philosophical question and invite essays on
both sides of the topic. They wind up inviting 4 essay finalists to come
together in Minnesota to debate the sides of the issue before an audience,
who narrows the field to 2, and then chooses a winner who they think made
the most compelling case.
In 2014, the question was ““Love or fear: which motivates us more?”
