A journey from colored to negro to black to Afro-American finally leads to the realization that none of these adjectives fit a life of cultural and emotional transition growing up in the mean streets of Los Angeles. Willie Welch left those streets 19 years ago to settle in N.E. Portland. He is retired and spends his time gardening, constructing paper sculpture, writing poetry, having fun with his mentee, and walking his Rottweiler.
