DJ Debbie presents ... Dr Tommie Smith -

DJ Debbie, aka Debbie Golt, starts the first of a short series of Leftfield Culture Encounters presenting an interview with none other than Dr Tommie Smith - the Olympic Gold Medallist - who took a major stand for human rights with his Black Power Salute on the victors' podium in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Still determined to make a difference he now has the Tommie Smith Foundation which makes a huge contribution to young people's well being through a number of interventions & opportunities.

In August 2011 Debbie met Dr Tommie Smith and others in a pre Olympics delegation - including Hodari B Davis, Michael Jeffries and young people from Black Wings and Young Gifted and Black, in London at the height of the then troubles. The event was organised by Rebop Productions. A return visit is planned during the 2012 Olympics in London & Debbie feels the impact already. It's a timely interview on the eve of the 2012 Olympic Games in London

Politics has no place at the Olympics? Didn't The USA boycott the 1980 games in Moscow for political reasons??Maybe if Tommie had made a stand against the North Vietnamese in 1968 he would have been a hero.
