This show demonstrates the amazing range and quality of today’s improvising musicians. It all fell into place quite easily. Bassist Lisa Hoppe’s fearless playing and compositions are a definite highlight. Drummer, composer and educator Tyshawn Sorey believes so much in the amazing music he made in a live concert with pianist Marilyn Crispell that he insisted that their new recording not be broken into separate tracks. You’ll hear an excerpt of that one hour + gig. Reed master Gebhard Ullman reveals a fascination with microtones on his new “MikroPuls”, while Paul Bley’s influence fuels a new recording by Pat Thomas’ trio. Michael Formanek’s Very Practical trio with Tim Berne and Mary Halvorson keeps him at the top of the list, while Chris Speed drew on Chris Tordini and Dave King for his new album. There’s so much to like in this show!
