How we treat one another matters. "If anyone claims, 'I am living in the light,' but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is still living in darkness." John's constant use of the metaphor of family ...we as children, God as Father and the necessary divide between those who are in the family of God and those who are in the world… this will be the focus of our attention this Sunday. As those in God's family, John commands us "Do not love this world nor the things it offers you…" and promises that the reward for fidelity to the family of God is great! " Anyone who does what pleases God will live forever." (2:17b) Further, we'll consider John's instructs to the children, the young men and the mature among us and consider how the different generations of God's family are to hear and respond to John's words.
