The Story of The Light BBC Radio 2 Part One 18th September 2017

A suberb radio documentary dedicated to the recently passed and much lamented stalwarts of the 'Light'; Paul Hollingdale and Brian Matthew. We always imagine these guys to be immortal, sadly the past 18 months have shown us, they are not. Many of the greats tarted their long careers on The Light Programme. Of course The Light was about much more than music programmes. It saw the birth of the 'soap opera' with The Archers, beginning in 1951 it still grips 100s of thousands of listewners to this day. Comedy was a huge part of it's out put too. Cheering a nation that had just been through a gruelling 5 years of war. A stellar contribution contribute to this comemmoration of a National Institution presented by Paul O'Grady: Johnny Beerling,June Whitfield,Petula Clark, Angela Rippon, Nicholas Parsons,Pete Murray, Esther Rantzen,Dennis Norden, Ray Galton, Alan Simpson,Barry Took, Tony Blackburn,,Johnnie Walker,David Hamilton,Paul Hollingdale,Ken Bruce and Judith Chalmers. A fitting tribute.

I remember most of the programmes so well, in those days we had much more popular classical music on the Light Programme than we have now. Every Wednesday morning we got ready for school with music by the likes of Ernest Tomlinson, and Charles Ancliffe, they would dip the music to give time checks at ten minute intervals. One of my favourite programmes was "Grand Hotel" on Sunday nights.

brings back some great memories, most of this stuff was talked about by my grandparents, as they didn't have TV until 1975, instead preferring radio. they used to tell me about workers playtime and educating archie etc and even when I went to stay, I would listen to listen with mother. of course, my preference was the pirates although I did like fluff on POTPs.
