Obedience is a dirty word in some circles, conjures up fear in others and is a warm blanket to some. Even for those who share a common faith in Christianity can find that what constitutes 'obedience' can vary greatly from church to church, and that is a sign of danger because it shows that obedience is determine by our church culture rather than by Jesus and His scriptures. In the Gospel of Matthew we see the greatest commandment is to love the Lord, our God, with all our heart, mind, soul and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Not only does all of obedience rest in that commandment, it also shows that obedience is not first in a list of do's and dont's but first in loving Jesus more fully and giving yourself to others. It's first a devotion issue and one that draws us near to God if we will cultivate the faith that rests in us as Christians. The result is growth as a follower of Christ and growth in seeing others renewed by giving your life away.
