After walking with the disciples for three years, Jesus has shown them the Father, served them, cleansed them, called them to abide, told them of the Helper to come and warned them that the world would hate them because of Him. In this final chapter of what it is consider His 'Farewell Discourse", Jesus begins to the Father on their behalf. In John 17:1-5 we see Jesus explain to us that eternal life is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ, the One that the Father had sent. We compare what the world seeks in eternal life, what American evangelicalism lives as eternal life and what the bible teaches as eternal life. The scriptures teach that eternal life is not having more stuff than everyone else, or being a more moral person than others, but in knowing the living God. In this opening of His prayer, Jesus sets us up for the handoff of the mission of introducing others to Jesus.
