Advent: Thirst

Thirst is common to all men and women, but how we experience it can vary incredibly. For most in affluent areas, it is a temporary condition, that is easily satiated by turning a handle, opening the refrigerator or stopping at the nearest corner to buy a drink. That ease though is a relatively recent occurrence in history. And really only something for affluent countries. And because of that we don't understand thirst as dependency for life. And because of that, we don't understand thirst for God. In this sermon we look at Psalm 42 where the writer expresses such a deep thirst and longing for God that the illustration he chooses is that of a deer, having been exhausted and harassed without water, who is now seen panting for a stream. In this illustration we see the deer's singular purpose, finding water that promises life. We see the deer's clarity in his dependency on that water. It knows it can't live long without it. And the author of Psalm 42 sees his relationship with God like the
