Advent: Hunger

In this second sermon on Advent, we look at Hunger, in the way it represents our dependency and longing. Most of us reading this have never really known hunger. Maybe we have been hungry because we skipped a meal, or maybe we fasted for a day, or maybe for longer, but food, relief from hunger, has always been just a pantry or refrigerator away. We don't know the pain of hunger and of the desperation of not knowing where your next meal will come from. It limits our understanding of hunger, our empathy for the hungry, our participation in ending hunger and ultimately it limits how hunger teaches us about our finiteness, our dependency and the true longing that hunger points toward, that of a spiritual hunger. Once again, the physical world points to a spiritual world. In this sermon we look at what is normally a passage about water, and we see a hungry Jesus, too weary to continue, who sends his disciples ahead for food. While the disciples are gone he meets a woman and begins revealing
