A Rooted Identity (1 Peter 1:1-2)

A Rooted Identity (1 Peter 1:1-2)

In this sermon, we start digging in to 1 Peter, looking at the life of Peter the Apostle of Jesus Christ. Peter wasn't always an apostle. When we first meet Peter in the scriptures his name is Simon. Later after confessing that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and the Savior, he is then called Cephas, which means rock and is translated in the Greek as Peter. We see Peter grow from a common fisherman, to a disciple of Jesus and be renamed Rock. From then on we see Peter in the tension of living under the tension of such a great name and rising to that name. We see great victories as he confesses Christ and preaches great sermons and we see him struggling as he denies Christ and lets the fear of man get the better of him. Ultimately we see him grow in the identity and role that Jesus has called him him. And praise Jesus, we get to read wisdom from a man who has made this journey and shares that wisdom with us both elect exiles in the 1st century and with us today. In addition to Simon
