Playing tracks by
Scuba, Benga & Coki, Breakage, Zero T & Mosus, S.P.Y & Kiat and more.
The second in my series of ongoing quarterly studio mixes. For this outing I experimented a little more with the collision of dub and jungle, and chose some higher-energy tracks than I might normally have chosen, in an attempt to give this session a summery vibe.
Often these days the collision of dub-influenced music with modern drum and bass is conflated with the arrival of the minimalist movement, but I view them separately. Dubstep and its ilk are far from minimalist by nature, despite the experimentation of some producers, and I feel that this mix is my own viewpoint of both the history and roots of drum and bass as well as a way forward into the possibilities of development via appropriation of extra-genre timbres and structures from other distinct musical movements that, like drum and bass, sprung from the fertile soil of dub music.
