Tom interviews Francois Kuttel - CEO of Oceana Group - about their Hout Bay plant - 26 April 2014

The Oceana Group operations in Hout Bay have come under massive scrutiny and criticism over the last 12 months because of the foul odour that accompanies their fish meal processing business. On Tom's Saturday Show this morning, the CEO, Francois Kuttel, gives his account of what steps they've historically taken and continue to take to alleviate the smell as far as they are able to. Convinced? Should they be doing more? Does his passion and explanations stand up to the scrutiny and vitriol that they've had to face in recent months? You be the judge!

The main question remains how many workers are directly involved at the Hout Bay plant, seems that we will never get this answer. How many people could be employed if there was no fish factroy there but turn the entire area into a touristical area. Would the average income of the local employee rise or lower? I do not have the answer, the only thing we know for sure is that the smell will NOT disappear. If indeed the number of employee is significant and those employees could not get a job in a non-polluting industry then nuisance should be accepted in the interest of employement.
