"British music going up in flames" read the front page of an issue addressing the hangover after the massive Britpop binge we had been enjoying. This was an exaggeration. But in many ways 1998 was the end of an era. Well part of an era anyway. There was a notable shift towards a darker, and sometimes rather sombre sound, as the post-Britpop era had begun. This was the year i began religiously listening to The Evening Session, enabling a transformation from Britpop kid to Indie teenager. And although a lot of great new bands tipped for big things never really took off commercially, there was plenty of great music to be found. Anyway here it is, 1998: a year that is and has remained musically close to my heart.
