Wordsound were a massively influential label for me. Whilst they have released a broad spectrum of musical styles and sounds, the area that really caught me was their hip hop-meets-dub element, best typified by Spectre, Sensational and others, as well as their modern Crooklyn Dub compilations which shot dub through dark, claustrophobic weed-drenched vibe that really caught my ear.
In addition to their excellent releases, I also loved their ethos. Run almost single-handedly by Skiz Fernando, the label pulled alongside Dischord and others as a glorious example of the punk DIY ethic put to action. Knowing that labels like Wordsound existed always gave me hope that subcultures survived and brilliant, interesting things abounded out there - even when hidden from sight.
The mix itself tours Wordsounds catalogue and also lifts dialogue from the excellent "WS50" DVD they released to celebrate 50 releases. Check out the label if you can.
