This is a special mix..Every one of these records were taken straight from the vinyl out of my Uncle Tim's dancehall reggae collection, many of which are rare 7" discs that he bought during the early 90s. Some of these songs you will not find ANYWHERE else on the internet, and that's saying something these days. With that being said...

What is Dancehall?

It's the "club music" of Jamaica in the 1990s, the direct influence of hip-hop music today with it's rhythmic toasting over hard drums and fat basslines. Kool Herc, the man responsible for bringing the earliest forms of hip-hop parties to life, was from Kingston, Jamaica and brought the sounds he had heard in soundclashes in the yards of his hometown to the South Bronx. Dancehall has two distinct types: the first being pop song oriented reggae, where many well known riddims and melodies are redone in a new style. The second style is called toasting, and this is the classic Jamaican rap. The songs on this mix are gems, so enjoy!
