Disco is a of course a short for discothèque, a nightclub in French. The word discothèque is a borrowing from French meaning a ‘library of phonograph records’, formed after bibliothèque. Under the discomusic-boom in the 70s the influence from America was exceptionally strong i France. Out of that came a special version of disco - French disco. The music was different. The reason is perhaps that french musicans were early users of electronics.
This first selection begins in 1970 with the pioneer of electronic music, Jean-Jacques Perrey (pic on the right), one of the first European artists to work with electronic instruments. The selection also contains tracks from the french speaking world (Lime are from Quebec, Pasteur Lappe is from Cameroun and Patric Juvet is Swiss born).
