CHICAGO, IL - For WNUR 89.3 FM - Continental Drift, I had the opportunity to speak with Khaïra Arby, one of the most prominent voices in Malian music today. Fellow Malians fondly call her "The Nightingale of the North" (Le Rossignol du Nord). I caught up with the desert blues/rock/Songhai/Berber songstress just before she stopped by Chicago on her 2012 Spring US Tour. She spoke about the current Malian coup d'état and Tuareg rebellions, her role in women's rights, and the differences this particular tour carries with it given the recent events in her homeland.
All tracks are excerpted from Khaira's album Timbuktu Tarab. "Le Monde pour La Paix" was a single released April 2012 by Jeconte and the Mali All-Stars, Khaïra Arby, Vieux Farka Touré, and Bassekou Kouyaté.
