Mijk van Dijk presents Japan City Pop of the 80s

Chart positions

This show was 24th in the global funk chart.

Come with me to Tokyo and let me introduce you to my latest guilty pleasure: City Pop, the funky soundtrack of the Japanese 80s. It’s all there: flamboyant arrangements, electronic beats and synths, cute girl vocals and cool AOR. So put that tape in your Walkman, look out of the windows of the Shinkansen and discover 15 artists to look out for.
Groove to the music of Taeko Ohnuki, Minako Yoshida, Junko Ohashi, Junko Yagami, Hitomi Tohyama, Yoko Oginome, Yurie Kokubu, Toshiki Kadomatsu, Makoto Matsushita, Cosmos, Vizion, Myx, Katsumi Horii Project, Mariya Takeuchi and her genius husband, the ever so mighty Tatsuro Yamashita!

Great selection. Reminds djing in the mid 80’s at the nightclubs around Finland. Dresscode was highly recommended at that time. I did gigs at the age of 14. :). Wibes!

BTW: the cover photo is NOT from the 80s, but was taken by myself during my stay at Hotel Excel Shibuya somewhen at the end of the 90s. The roofs of Tokyo with all their air condition outlets, antennas and functional items always seem like a grounding contrast to the shiny facades of the city.
Down to earth, sky-high!

Any chance you could share the playlist? There were a couple tracks I loved but couldn't identify with apps. Thank you for the amazing mix!

Today I noticed that for the first time one of my Mixcloud sets scored over 10.000 listeners with over 103.750 minutes listening time. That’s truly amazing!
Domo-arigato gozaimashita to all who have been listening and supporting my humble dedication to Japan City Pop of the 80s, a genre which I fell in love with years ago and which I have been crate-digging during my last tours to Japan. Also thanks to electronic beats for mentioning my mix on their webzine and all of you who have been sharing and recommending it to your friends.
Mijk and Robert crate digging in TokyoFinally thanks to my dear friends Toby Izui and Robert Palmer from Tokyo for helping me dig in the right places to find those true gems of Japan City Pop on vinyl and to the patient staff at Jet Set Records, City Country CIty Records, Next Records, Ella Records, Recofan and all those Diskunion stores I’ve been raiding over the past years.
I’m truly genki and I guess I need to mix Japan City Pop Volume 2 for you very soon!!!
