FROM RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY - It’s time to introduce a true sound pioneer. A man that through his radical engineering and mixing techniques actually changed the way we hear music. He fought the space invaders, he rid the world of the evil curse of the vampires, he even won the world cup. It’s the heavyweight dub champion himself… the mighty Scientist! It was at the legendary King Tubby’s studios in Kingston, Jamaica, that Hopeton Brown aka Scientist developed his unique dub style – playful, psychedelic, full of echo explosions and blasts of feedback. After learning his trade at Tubby’s, Scientist went on to work at Channel One studios, becoming the favourite engineer of producer Henry Junjo Lawes, for whom he mixed several albums featuring the Roots Radics and singing sensation Barrington Levy. In 1982 Scientist moved on from Channel One to the greener pastures of Tuff Gong, before leaving Jamaica completely a few years later to live in the USA.
