The colonization of the so-called New World visited a lot of pillage and plunder upon the original inhabitants of North America - a 500-year campaign that has devastated a once proud and plentiful indigenous population. Thankfully, their many cultures - including their many musics - have weathered the storm of European genocide (though tragically, oppression continues even to this very day!)
This edition of Stargasm! features two hours of spoken word and musical performances of and inspired by Native North Americans. And don't think you've heard it all, either - Indigenous North American music has roots that extend far and wide, and there is a lot more to it than New Age wooden flute music echoing in a canyon (though there is certainly a time and place for that too).
We're talking everything from cylinder recordings of ancient customary dances to "Native Dubstep", and there's a lot in between - punk, hip-hop, funk and more. Even Mike Patton gets in on the action.
