TDK C90

Playing tracks by

Three Johns, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Live Skull, Sonic Youth, March Violets and more.

Chart positions

This show was 14th in the global post-punk chart, 16th in the global retro chart and 16th in the global vinyl chart.

An oldie tape I found in the attic recently.
Certainly not the first mix/set - or rather playlist - I did in my life, but the oldest one that survived I guess, dated from Dec 1988.

Pretty lofi & nothing special in here, maybe a live recording from Tuxedomoon 1986 that I didnt find elsewhere. Anyways, for me it has got a very special resonance :)

Loved it! Wasn't aware of great portions of the material. Thank you

johnny_nowhere

Absolutely LOVE the selections. I own almost all of them myself on vinyl still.

meistsonnig

Thanks for the love, John, I myself have those on vinyl (only the Tuxedomoon is a radio capture), but my player wont work ;-)

The Unforgiven

i almost dunno where to start writing this feedback , everybody in showbizz are talking about digging crates , authenticity , mixing for 1000's of years , resident dj inside their own head , getting all the babes and killing the bad guys but what is true about all that !?
it's not even important as long as there are people who can hear if something's authentic and see the differeance between bullshit & reality

TDK C90 is real , also because i prefer to focus on the positive aspects , i do believe there are talented people outhere who are capable of recording this tape in 2016 but who can make it sound as if it's recorded in 1988
OMG ; dunno where this is going hmmmm lemme think , you did recorded this in 1988 , that fact only makes it worthy 4 listen allready
could you record TDK C90 today !?

The Unforgiven

ps ; i think you can , buthat's not up to me to answer !

meistsonnig

Thanks for your reflections. I still have a (rather cheap) tape recorder, the same I used for digitizing this set, but I cant get my record player connected to my pc or other audio device, so this is the crux. Doesnt make really sense to copy mp3 to tape...

The Unforgiven

aha , i did not had expected an answer like that because i meant hmmmm to record an old crunchy tape with nowadays skills & equipment , i dunno how i can say this in a better way ,..i mean in the past we had no other options then to use the options we had , today we have options enuff , today we can make a movie that looks like as if it's recorded in 1963 , you knowhat i mean !?

same with photoshopping , in past we had only a camera , today with all software we are able to make a picture as if it's made 90 years ago

meistsonnig

Sorry, I think I didnt get you when I answered recently. You are right, I couldnt do a set like this nowadays, sounding as crunchy and retro as this one. So, I am glad I did it. However, I think some people still have the gift to sound like yesterday, e.g. my friend https://www.mixcloud.com/kaliman-oxcuro/. Check ouut some of his vinyl tagged mixes, really worth to listen. Will take you back to 80s or beyond

The Unforgiven

it's not always easy to describe in english something technikal as we both know ,..often best to work with examples like this and that , right now i am not sure if it's really that difficult when we use old recordings or add a little crackling then & there !?

The Unforgiven

i totally understand why it has a special feeling for you , you listened dis stuff back in 1888 am i right !?
jezus , that's century's ago , in the meantime ww 1 / 2 , vietnam war , napoleon just died ,...hahsaaa i am just kidding , same counts 4 1988 , the years are passing by as if they are nothing

The Unforgiven

did you print the cover like that in the past to your tapes or did you print the playlist now as a cover to this mix !?
in both cases maybe you wanna show me how you do that !?

meistsonnig

Sorry, I didnt see your question 2 months back.... The cover is a foto with my smartphone from the original cassette inlet/cover, which was printed in those days with my 9x9 dot-matrix printer (dont exist any more I guess, those that make a horrible noise while printing). The foto is unintentionally a bit red-tinged, the print was black script on white paper. As with sound effects (scratch crackling fx you mentioned to sound older), surely there will be a font for modern computers that looks like this

The Unforgiven

no prob , recognized and i am able to picture what you are saying
i see it in front of me
our conversation in here = an example of the importance of these background information messages , our mixes are just mixes , ugly , beautiful , cool , crappy , whatever , it's the background inside info which makes the mixes come alive , gives them a face and authentic , don't you think !?

meistsonnig

The mixes itself are rather exciting (at least yours, mine I let to judge by others), but you are right saying that the exchange of ideas on e.g. how the sets were crafted makes it less anonymous and thus more personalized, hence more interesting (to me). cheers
