It’s 1972, I’m in Goulds shop in Wolverhampton and I see this amazing looking album on the rack – The Trojan Story – I’m immediately attracted to the eye catching record labels on the cover and it bears a sticker saying 3 LP set; it appears to be the history of Jamaican music! My goodness. I only get 25p a week pocket money though and this set costs £2.99, my Mom has given me £5 as she had no change and told me I am NOT to spend more than my 25p. Well you can guess the rest. I bought the LP and spent 3 months without pocket money to pay her back.
The original set was dubbed from vinyl and the track listing was incorrect far as continuity was concerned, so I have rearranged the track listing so it runs in it’s correct date order. I’ve cut 6 tracks to get the time down. It's not definitive (no Prince Buster!) but as an education and introduction to non-chart Jamaican music, this was a pivotal record for me, right down to the sleeve notes which I can still recite today.
