Alton Ellis is my all time favourite singer. I first heard him when I was 12 years old in 1972, performing the immortal “Rock Steady” on The Trojan Story triple LP. It was love at first listen. This is a guy who could sing the phone book and make it sound soulful. I wanted to try and get all Alton’s greatest records in one place, hence this compilation. I have included a few alternate takes so that the diehard’s might still find it interesting, plus several of Alton’s brilliant cover versions of Soul tracks, which he was particularly adept at. I’ve had to leave one or two things off as I only had access to 12” versions. I’ve also had to use the Studio One version of “Breaking Up” as opposed to my preferred version, the Treasure Isle one, but apart from that, this is about as perfect a showcase of Alton’s genius talent as I could put together.
