NORTHERN SOUL - THE CASINO YEARS 1975 - 1977

Playing tracks by

THE MATTA BABY, EARL JACKSON, YVONNE BAKER, JOE HICKS, DETROIT LAND APPLES and more.

Welcome to part 3 of my version of “The Wigan Casino Years”. Last weekend, we kicked off in late 1973 and four hours later, we were at the tail and of 1975, which is where this episode kicks off. This is prime time stuff for me because not long after this, I became a Casino regular so I did actually hear all of these records played there. And anyone who claims Wigan only played pop stompers is in for a rude awakening. True, there were some low points, and I don’t shy away from these, that’s why in the next part you’ll hear the likes of Tim Tam & The Turn Ons – but it’s an accurate record of what was played, and when. Things like Lynne Randell and Gene Chandler were oldies undergoing a massive revival. It is not strictly chronological but it’s not far off. On this episode, Little Anthony is a year too late but that’s only because I couldn’t find it last week and it was too good to exclude. I apologise for any glaring omissions, but I just didn’t have the records.

The thing about doing a compilation is they are tunes that we ourselves associate with that year/venue etc. If we put every tune that we remembered from then we would need a collection of uploads. They're a personal recollection of our times. Each of us would make a different selecrion. Just like the 'Top 500'. It amazes me how some made it and others didn't. And I'm sure it would be a totally different list if diggerent people made their choices. But its typical.

Agree that a lot of records had revivals indeed- a lot of people later on associate records with Mr Ms- but a lot were played in the big room years earlier and even then they were being revived!- just enjoy all the great sounds we had on our wonderful scene - no matter where you heard them...by the way wondering who Claret is, as I was a regular at the great Accy British Legion x

Sorry Pete. Wasn't being critical. Really appreciate the work you do. But it seems that Bernie Williams follows the Embers? Instigations and Detroit Execs are missing. Yvonne Bakers missing too. Haven't listened to Part 4 yet. Maybe they are there.

Was banging on about Cool Off before I listened. Seems like it's missing Pete! A couple of others too early on.

Nothing is too early. And Cool Off is on one of them.

Thanks Pete. Some real gems here. I can still remember when and where I first heard Cool Off - Not the Casino but Accrington British Legion. Every Friday they had a Northern night upstairs. That record has always been a favourite for some reason.
