The End of Tapes Album

The End of Tapes Album

About the show

Playing tracks by

Marius G.Mihalache and Marius G. Mihalache.

I still have two tape recorders (magnetophones), and many magnetic tapes with music that I listened in the old days of '70 - '80. But always at the end of these magnetic tapes I record all sorts of things, small songs made by me, recordings with my band, or strange noises.
Here in the '70 the most common magnetic tapes they were ORWO (produced in DDR - Deutsche Demokratische Republik), AGFA and BASF.
I disbanded the erasing head of my magnetophone and make some overlay but with obvious loss in sound quality. It was fun in those years to use the standard speed 4,7/9,5/19 cm/s, to change the speed with my finger directly on the tape, or turn pieces of tape and stick them with gutter. Now I have recovered these tape ends and I mixed with other pieces done digitally in last years, or unfinished songs.
I found a recording with me at age 3 in which I repeat over and over with a very creepy voice "youuu're in a booox of doooolls' ... so...this was in my head when I mixed all.

crunch... all my music is a crunch :)) I do not know which or where is the place you heard crunch... but... almous all the noise come from a magnethophone or from some noises found on magnetic tapes. Sounds from my house... bathroom... sound of a TV that is heard in the neighborhood... sound of a tape when they jump off the roll... etc.

So... I will take the story to end ....
There in this small town of Zvornik .. next to the hotel where I lived, stopped a circus ... a huge tent and a small amusement park... roundabout, carousel... you know... and I in my room hearing all day voices speaking a foreign language, laughter and music... barell organ music. Noise was sometimes tiring and I then walking down to the edge of a big lake where people strolling boats and where sometimes passing small ships. It was a nice place there. Some of my friends from there had a floating house... we went in the middle of the lake to make bathe. Well ... really .. I can not bring all this in music. But maybe someday I'll do a movie :)

@Miss Phi... I played for three months in Yugoslavia, in Zvornik town (from Bosnia) in 1990. I was 22 years and I did many friends there. Among them was a girl who was looking at me strangely nice. After some days she came to me with a picture of her with something written on the back. I knew nothing of the Serbian language, we could not understand so we never talked... however, I saw it frequently because she coming on my singing place almost daily. I only knew her name and her name was Ruža. (Rose in English). I learned a song in Serbian then, mechanically speaking, about a man who lives alone in a room and thinks about his girlfriend. But I never sang in front of her. When I returned home in my country I found a dictionary and I found it I had written on the photo that she loves me. It felt like a train passes over me ... One had missed. After a time war broke out there. There were problems between Bosnia and Serbia, mainly religious and territorial, and that town was situated on a river that separates Serbia from Bosnia. One morning I saw on TV some footage shot in that little town. Trucks full of dead bodies... children, young, old ... was terrible because I befriended many people there. Thought it still terrifies me. I do not know if she's still alive... other than in my memory ....

I agree - it's odd, diverting & strangely addictive - will need to give this another listen.
