Plato's "realism" and conventional religious institutions being exemplary loci of nihiism. It also seems to explain why many rev. types have difficulty imagining usury in daily life and upper class types coast on presumptive narratives of what is nihilism for those closer to the real polity. In some sense also neo-liberalism's narratives of exemption. I'll spend some time composing something longer soon thanks for the bounce back. It will help me summarize the massive weight of nihilism in these times. fast forward, T

I'll quickly give you my (limited) take on Nihilism. FWN , later Heiddeger and the French Philosophers incl. Sartre Lacan etc.etc started to declare the Post Modern Position (all is created in relation to Culture. Language, Experience etc.) So the illusion of the false certitude of all concepts was exposed. That opened up that no-mans-land where propaganda had now a wide open field to impose an even tighter (old) Reality, the Reality of the clan, religion etc. So what should have served an openness to transcendence resulted in a paranoid regress.
How did Bertrand Russell put it: 'The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves and wiser people so full of doubts.'

Primary text right now is the book "The Self-Overcoming of Nihilism" by Nishitani Keiji, a zen monk/philosophy prof who studied with Heidegger for two years, and then taught philosophy at a Japanese Univ. Short answer to your question is "yes." Feel free to ask more questions, though I will respond vial email. Pretty dense stuff actually. Vico essentially led the evolution of philology into hermeneutics, though FWN does not mention him, though FWN was about 120 years later, so he benefited. Vico focused upon the authorship of the lineage known as "Homer," and thereby prior to classical Athens et al, contra Plato's nihilist blather. Writing all out in longer form is something I want to do anyway(Y or N). Vico (Naples/circa 1725, first version) was essentially severely suppressed in his lifetime by the RC church. The false certitude steps in nominal idealism including Hegel and then nominal "realism" such as the nominal "enlightenment." pax, T

I quickly looked at Nishitani's book. Looks interesting. What we call problem of nihilism is a lot of times the problem how to live without the 'signposts and 'instructions to do' that every concepts embodies. If we leave the familiar but mechanical world of doing there is a difficult and long period where we are not yet in conctact with beeing (end of isolation in self concept) and do not have the certainty of our conceptual functioning anymore. This no-mans-land is a very difficult passage and probably just people with enough spiritual instinct have the staying power to get to the other side. (peace)
Of course we can continue on an e-mail base....

yes, though global warming is part of the pattern, minus the big blow, still not quite cricket. Silk Road Book turned out to be extensive and well done, learned a number of new things and histories, eg the origin of "Slav" being Nordic. Deep into FWN's zen concept of nihilism*****. #45 inc remains a butt-hd/aka "pfc bone spurs", then ther is the nihilism of generational hubris. so hwz th global chillin' and the local neo-libs? too much wtf stupid goin on. knw much abt Vico? seems to be under appreciatd and then 22much hekadamic stpd/conceit. ta, ta, y'all T

Tell me a bit more about FWN's zen concept of nihilism. Did he realize that consciousness through concepts is by itself already corrupted? But it's the only game in town for modern society (besides work). Your questions about global chillin' goes to the wrong guy. Socially I am pretty much as unconnected as you can get (this includes 'my' music too). Do not know much about Giambattista Vico. But anybody who sees through the illusions of the false certitude of rationalism must be pretty intelligent.
Keep jamin'
