plz excuse the typos
Yes , I agree we have had somewhat parallel pursuits, though you were in a more progressive and less antagonistic. Captured by method by method is part of it, and it goes beyond that to also include an already captured metaphysics. Hempel et al were materialistic positivism which can/could only reproduce itself. Your recontextualization is itself hermeneutic in nature as a mode of communication. I abandoned academia in favor of praxis and was confronted with equally pernicious forms of pretense and fraudulent occupation of a communal. Many nominal progressive activities are a slim dis-stance from from being just another occupation by fascism. The title of my thesis was The Formalization of the Phenomenology of Alfred Schutz. I was following Husserl's Formal and Transcendental Logic. One of my primary mentors was Richard Palmer who was the primary translator of Has Gadamer into English. Palmer was a Quaker and a professor of comparative Literature. It was a rude awakening to have my efforts consumed by such blatant hostile, though I'll admit the chair of my cmte was essentially a shill. He had been employed in the use of statistics for an insurance company, and was mentored into occupying a professorship under his statistical and positivistic suppositions. The U of Pgh also had a nominal Center for the History and Philosophy of Science that was exclusively positivistic under the madness of method. Yes, our history bears out a deeply similar approach. I consumed a number of years battling fraud within nominal progressive organizations which were fully lacking in transparency. I spent a number of years pressing economic literacy, with a similar apparent lack of impact, partly because I was attacking essentially fraud with a progressive veneer. Drumming has been a mode wherein there is a certain transparency performance and as a collective. Currently I am busy reinventing the West African Agbe, and in some sense restoring its historical nature, contrary to it being occupied as a corporate product. I just recently hybridized elements of the Hawaiian Ipu HeKe/Ole in the design of a compound gourd Agbe. fast forward, jam on!
Thanks for you comments. Enjoyed the journey. I found Existential Phenomenology very interesting and read some books of Husserl . I do not know anything about Has Gadamer or Alfred Schutz. I know that Husser influenced the french philospher Jaques Lagan who helped me to understand the bubble of language. Then of course in buddist philosphy everything is declared the dream that it is...but from there to stop being hypnothised by words took me 35 years...as long as we cannot release ourselves from willing, we are caught...The key is, that when words do not pollute anymore there is a natural wordless intelligence that can take the place of the earlier confusion. Otherwise there would be no exit...Enjoyed the exchange!!
Let me approach this topic a bit differently. I was essentially run out of a graduate Phd program in sociology over this very distinction. I came to the program with a technical major in biology, with minors in Chemistry, Sociology, and Philosophy. I arrived at DePaul University in Chicago, with an unfinished major in chemistry from my prior college, but I was out of synch with the DePaul Chemistry program. If I had finished with B S in Chemistry, it would have taken me a year longer. I got permission from the Dean of Undergraduates to take the major level courses for my distribution credits, thereby the minors in sociology and philosophy, in addition to the effective prior minor in chemistry. The prof that I chose as my advisor for the graduate program was supposedly keen on mathematical sociology, which meant really coming up with formalized models of human behavior. I took him seriously and actually ended up revolting against mechanistic behaviorist model entirely, most because it really was imo a poor use of the modeling process. I went after a higher level of modeling using what is called abstract algebra. Part of this shift was based upon Edmund Husserl's work as a mathematician and phenomenologist, and as passed through Alfred Schutz who was an economist, sociologist, and also a musician, and obviously much more strongly based upon a humanities tradition. The behaviorist aka mathematical sociology treated human being as if they were rats in a maze, rather than of a much more complex and social nature. I knew at the time that several members of that sociology dept had been involved in the "Camelot Project which was the US CIA looking for academic support toward suppressing popular re3volution and resistance to the imperial agenda. To shorten this a bit, there are at least two different forms of social science, one in very materialistic, and the other is derived from the humanities via hermeneutics and more. It requires a somewhat revolutionary re-visioning to apply a non- materialistic and non-behavioristic disciple as "science," to challenge the phony, imo, version of science, and the academy is full of the conceits of materialism and wealth as an endowed validation of that world view. My major point is that there really is at least two different versions of the answer of the question:what is science, and what is implied by being "scientific." It is easiest to see the difference in how material done under the notion of science is actually contextualized. Art and artistry delves into that realm of contextualization, the materialistic version of "art" is quite deliberately contextualized in favor of low commerce. Your science and artisanship is the former version/vision. There is a longer version to this discourse, but this should make my point.
Thanks for all those infos. Very interesting. As a matter of fact I asked myself several times if you are also a 'nerd' in addition to beeing a drummer, haha! What is interesting is a certain prallelism in our lives. What's the name of this 70 or 80 page essay you have to do in University? I entered the 'Hochschule St.Gallen' in Switzerland which can be compared with the London School of Economics. But since during that time I started to find that working to live was preferable to living to work I went into another direction and after the first two years I took a specialisation in Sociology. This Essay that you have to do I did in Philosophy. The Title was more or less: Compare Possitivistic Science to the 'Frankfurt School', the humanistic, emancipatory and dialectical Theory. (In German this are Horkheimer, Adorno, Habermas. Habermas had written a book with the title: Erkenntniss und Interesse' which is roughly' Insight and Interest' (So my earlier observations linking Interest to insight comes from there). So it was Hopper against the people who where more interested in the the Human and his emanzipation than in Instrumentalization of Knowledge. So we were finding ourselves in quite comparable circumstances and attitudes I think especially if you include the artistic bent. Against the fetishisation of Method and for radical Decentralisation in Intuition. ( The Year I wrote the essay was 1973 by the way),
His name is Trilock Gurtu.
Thanks.. Its the Dragon de lune from Hadouk Trio.
spoken like a deep humanities person. In fact, there are several flavors of doing science, ranging from a lock step materialism of low presuppositions as a thinly posited materialism that primarily posit an entitlement to salaried position in the hekademia(cf Plato) and related presuppositions embedded as conceits. And at the other end of the spectrum is science as an attitude accessing maximum subtleties and capacities as modeling rather than faith based materialism. The distance between art and science is usually inflated to sustain conceit. keep on, keeping on, you are doing science as a artisan
Could not say it better! Science like language is prisonner of it's own order. It looks through its own presuppositions in order to get to a DESIRED result. So the interest determines the findings. The objective is PRACTICAL, Knowledge is before all MANIPULATIVE and should not be declared as a reflection of REALITY, which difies any objectivation. ( I think thats what you describe as 'to sustain conceit'). Art springs from a suspension of WILL and practicality (which come later in the process). If we started to understand that we could start to form a society in the service of the Human and not only his Neurosis.
Very nice . Came across a piece were the "dj" was demonstrating the use of a computer program in "composing" a set. Interesting toward understanding the process of re-composition as an art form, fairly literally an excursion as much as a composition. thanks for your flights of creation.
Hello my friend, yes I am also only discovering the intricacies of composition. The previous song completely changes the perception of the following song. In the end I have no system at all and do everything from the belly or the ear if you prefer. Life is so much more than any system could discover in a million years. Science became the new Religion....I will be publishing a set everyday now for over a week. My prefered on (which will receive nearly zero recognition) is the one that comes out on the 4th of may (Illuminated Madness). The very end of it is by 'Hadouk Trio' and I have a suspicion that the percussionist is the Indian Musician that lives in Germany that you recomended to me. Take care..
