We Need More Crates Radio - Episode 79

Playing tracks by

Rose Royce, Funky 4+1, Blondie, Spoonie Gee, Fab 5 Freddy and more.

Chart positions

This show was 12th in the global old school hip hop chart, 14th in the global underground hip hop chart, 46th in the global hip-hop/rap chart and 52nd in the global rap chart.

I start with a few things that happened in 1979 and go through the early years in the first half then it's mostly 90's classics

That was a interesting idea to do the date thing with '79. You could probably do that each show now up until 2019 (maybe even 2020?)! I think they say Fatback Band's "King Tim III" came out a few months before "Rapper's Delight" and may actually be the first commercially released rap song. I'm thinking that was '79, as well. I've been thinking about picking up Chuck D's book. Sooner or later! Another good one is "Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists." That's got all kinds of crazy info in it. And I realized as I was listing to the older tracks you were playing, that early rap music really had an obsession with aliens and space. Haha Anyway, Large Pro is always dope, and I forget about the original Turn it Up version without the Knight Rider sample. OH and if you're digging for samples, one that was in your Erick Sermon track and used by EPMD and lots of others is Faze-O "Riding High" which I'd love to get on vinyl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWJCMTVeVZ4 Great show!

LOL no no only for 79. I knew someone would bring up the Fatback band but according to this book rapper delight was first. I have heard that before but maybe because it's actually a funk single it didn't count as rap? Also I would say that if you would ask anyone they would say rappers delight although Google does say otherwise. I had never heard of it you? I do have ego trips book and record lots of good fun facts in there for sure!!! One day you'll have to put out a book with all this sample info in your head and share it with the masses. haha. But Faze O ok I'll keep an eye out. Thx man!

Funky Corners

I remember reading about King Tim III a while back, and ended up finding the Fatback record it was on for pretty cheap. It's not a bad album, and King Tim III sounds exactly like you think it will. Haha

Funky Corners

So strange! After all that talk about not wanting to buy more things, I went to a record shop in Massachusetts over the weekend, and guess what I found? Faze-O! Haha! That's wild! I'll post it all at some point soon.

The Captain Who Went To Lunch

Btw, I always enjoyed Funky4+1... and that 12" single of Rapper's Delight was always a killer for me.
Great show man!
I love it how you put in a bit of historical facts. :)

WE NEED MORE CRATES RADIO

Haha thank you! I'm a sucker for hiphop fun facts. Looking forward to the mix you and T have been plotting. Peace man
