Before there was a Radio BSOTS podcast, before there was a Both Sides Of The Surface website, there was a monthly email newsletter called On The Verge (OTV). From January 1999 until December 2001, the newsletter contained a ton of music reviews along with personal essays and commentary. The mix tape celebrates some of the sounds that got coverage within OTV and was recorded in April of 2002. While it's not the best mix in the world and perhaps a bit volume challenged in spots, it represents a pre-BSOTS moment in time that, in some ways, led me to do what I'm doing now.
Side A of the mix tape includes voice mail messages, a crudely put together theme song, shout outs from three of the OTV scribes (Downtempo Don, Chloe Knuckles, and Vic Feedle), and closes with a sound collage piece that I made on a four-track cassette recorder in February 2000. Those pieces are like bad jokes: I've got a million of 'em. Anyway, hope you enjoy it. Side B to be posted soon...
