12 June is a sad day for the civil rights activists in both the USA and in South Africa. NAACP Field Secretary Medgar Evers was in 1963 shot in front of his house and ANC leader Nelson Mandela was, exactly 1 year later, sentenced to life imprisonment. We commemorate this with music of a.o. Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, Johnny Clegg and Tracy Chapman.
Fortunately, June 12 is also the date that some artists were born which brought some pleasure to many people. Songwriter Richard M. Sherman (° 1928) made together with his brother Robert numerous songs that brings us back a few decades in our lives while both Len Barry (° 1942-the Dovells & solo) and Reg Presley (° 1943-the Troggs) wrote some songs which earned their place in the music treasure chamber of the 1960s.
