Wind in Lonely Fences - A Farewell to Harold Budd

Wind in Lonely Fences - A Farewell to Harold Budd

Chart positions

This show was 2nd in the global chill chart, 3rd in the global ambient chart and 3rd in the global chillout chart.

2020, you unrelenting bastard. Now you've taken Harold Budd from us. An icon in ambient music.

There's not much I can say right now except that I love his music. I have about 25 albums by Harold Budd. His music has been with me for more than 40 years. When I heard the news I knew the only proper tribute I could do was a mix.

Godspeed Harold, your music remains in our ears and on the wind.

Harold Budd is one of my very favorite ambient musicians. I first heard his work back in about '84--The Plateaux of Mirror. That first song--"First Light" was the first of his I ever heard and I was immediately moved and drawn in. I have nearly all of his recordings. While I feel some of his later work started to become less distinctive, I still enjoyed much of it. It's been a soundtrack for my own life for nearly forty years now! I would say my favorite albums of his were the two he did with Brian Eno, then one step down would be "Lovely Thunder", "White Arcades", "By the Dawn's Early Light", and "Luxa". I was surprised at how he continued to produce new music right up to the end of his life. As he is one of the older ambient musicians out there, I kept an eye out for his passing, but was still surprised and saddened when it arrived, especially via COVID (although it sounds like he may have already been on his way out). I expect his music will continue to be with me for the rest of my life.

Thank you so much for doing this musical tribute to him. I appreciated the way you trimmed some of the songs to make room for a greater variety of them. Very nicely done!

Thanks. I am with you when it comes to the 40+ year journey. So many paths explored thanks to the Obscure Records releases.

A friend and I were making lists of the best albums every year from 1965 to the present and it was great to go back and re-discover some of the awesome releases from Obscure records. Thanks for listening!

I was hoping I wouldn't have to hear An Echo of Night on this mix, but then you went ahead and did it. That one's from my favourite Harold Budd album. Way to go, 2020 :(

"An Echo of Night" is one of my all-time favorite ambient tunes so I just had to include it.

A beautiful mix .... thankyou so much for honoring this most amazing human. I first heard his ethereal wondrous sounds with The Moon and the Melodies, way back last century. I think it was this album that enlightened my soul to soothing ambient soundscapes, that to this day, I require often....

I'm glad you're enjoying the mix. I too have to go back to the last century to find when I first heard Harold Budd. I believe it was Ambient #2. I've been a fan ever since. Thanks for listening and thanks for sharing your Harold Budd experience.
