Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still

Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global chill chart and 3rd in the global ambient chart.

What got me started on this mix was a video I found by Wouter van Veldhoven called "two sad tape recorders." It's two portable reel to reel tape machines each playing their loops at the same time.

The sound of those sad tape recorders reminded me of mixes I've done that combine very old recordings with new music that blends well with those scratchy, noisy old records. That's where this mix began and from there I went in search of old cylinder recordings, which have gotten easier to find since my first mix with this theme back in 2008.

The vintage cuts that I used come from Edison cylinders recorded around 1906 to 1908. Most of the old tracks are effected in some way. Sometimes I slowed the original way down, or added echo and reverb. For many of them the original is combined with the effected version to create some bizarre other-worldly sound.

This was originally a guest mix on

On my sonic journey thru LLM'S vast collection of over 300 plus mixes, i have arrived at one of the most interesting and even historical as LLM has ma aged to source old (early 1900's) cylindrical recordings and melded them to some modern artists who deploy similar sound techniques. Thank you LLM for all the curational effort you've put in these mixes. May i post the tracklist for those who want to delve deeper.

That Idiot

This mix was the best for getting my toddler to sleep in the car. He came to telling me to turn it off because he knew what it did to him. I played it the other day (2 years later) in the car and he asked suspiciously, "Daddy - Did I used to listen to this when I was little?" He was asleep soon thereafter :-) Thank you for moments of peace and quiet.
