The stars above us - the role of the conductor, and Vladimir Jurowski on Rachmaninoff

The stars above us - the role of the conductor, and Vladimir Jurowski on Rachmaninoff

From beating time to rehearsing to inspiring the orchestra during performance - what do members of the orchestra look for in a conductor? As part of our Shakespeare400 celebrations, and inspired by a quote from King Lear, we asked two members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra for their insight.

The new release on the LPO Label is an all-Rachmaninoff album, recorded live during our 2015 Rachmaninoff festival. The LPO's Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski shares the history behind his grandfather's orchestration of 10 Rachmaninoff Songs, and the ban on Rachmaninoff performances in the Soviet Union.

Featured recording:
Rachmaninoff: Symphony No. 3; 10 Songs (Vsevolod Grivnov - tenor). Live recording from 2015 conducted by Vladimir Jurowski
LPO-0088
£9.99 (CD); available on all major download and streaming platforms
