Staging Rachmaninoff's The Miserly Knight - Arden and Jurowski

Staging Rachmaninoff's The Miserly Knight - Arden and Jurowski

Director Annabel Arden and LPO Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski on their semi-staging of Rachmaninoff and Wagner operas in January 2015.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra's first London concert of 2015 was an ambitious operatic double bill conducted by our Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Vladimir Jurowski. Forming part of our Rachmaninoff: Inside Out festival, we put on a semi-staging of his early opera The Miserly Knight, coupled with excerpts from Wagner’s mighty Das Rheingold including the complete opening scene between Albrech and the Rheinmaidens. Sergei Leiferkus sang Albrech in the Wagner, and the miserly Baron in the Rachmaninoff. Before the performance the director Annabel Arden and conductor Vladimir Jurowski talked to David Nice about the pairing and staging of these two works, including the common musical and visual themes.

The featured recording is the LPO's new CD of Vaughan Williams' Symphonies Nos. 4 and 8, LPO-0082.
